The Batwa Pygmy Trail experience in Uganda will take you on a guided trail guided by Batwa guides to the secret sacred Garamba cave. This Batwa trail experience adds more value to the already existing tourism activities in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park that include Gorilla tracking, Golden monkey tracking and hiking the Virunga volcano mountains.
Batwa Pygmy are the first forest people who used to live their original cultural setting and this extraordinary Batwa Pygmy experience will take on long or short trails that start with a short prayer in whispers to their god of the forest Biheeko who they believe has powers to offer protection or deprive one of life as they go on their hunting, raiding communities, fruit gathering and other activities in the forest they once shared with wildlife before they were evicted from the forest to gazette it as a national park.
During the Batwa Pygmy experience, you will learn about the different importance of medicinal plants and herbs, how they traditionally harvest be honey, their hunting skills in the forest, how they fetched water using bamboo tubes, build their huts and fire making by rubbing dry sticks against the other.
Visitors will also visit the Garama cave which is a 200 meters long larvae tube which is the highlight of this whole trail experience and should not be missed during a visit to Mgahinga Gorilla National park. A lot used to take place in this cave. It was their king’s residence, training area, granary to keep their food, among others. The cave now has an enriched shelter at the top which was done by the USAID- Sustainable Tourism in the Albertine Rift Program.
You will learn how Batwa used to hide in the cave which is 342 meters in length and 14 meters deep, from Bantu people who had no idea where the Batwa hid. The trail walk passes through mountain woodland offering a beautiful scenery and many birds can be seen too.
The Batwa Trail experience is always wrapped up with Batwa pygmy songs and ground stamping dance moves that visitors are welcome to join. It is a memorable experience.
