Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe/Kampala
Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport or in Kampala, Uganda, you will be greeted and transferred to your accommodation in either Kampala or Entebbe. Take the remainder of the day to relax, adjust to the time zone, and prepare for your upcoming adventure.
Day 2: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Early in the morning, embark on a scenic drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. This journey will take approximately 8-10 hours, passing through beautiful landscapes and rural villages. Upon arrival, check into your lodge near the park and take some time to settle in.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing by the park rangers. They will provide insights into the gorilla trekking experience and guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of both visitors and gorillas. Following the briefing, begin your trek into the dense forest in search of a gorilla family. The trek duration can vary widely based on the location of the gorillas, ranging from 1-6 hours. Once you locate a gorilla family, spend a magical hour observing their behavior, taking photographs, and absorbing the incredible atmosphere. Afterward, trek back to the lodge to relax and recount your gorilla encounter.
Day 4: Transfer to Goma, DRC
Depart from Bwindi early in the morning and cross the border into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The journey to Goma, your next destination, will take approximately 3-4 hours, depending on border crossing procedures and road conditions. Upon arrival in Goma, check into your hotel and rest up for the volcanic adventure awaiting you the next day.
Day 5: Nyiragongo Volcano Hike
Today marks the highlight of your journey as you prepare for the Nyiragongo Volcano hike. Early in the morning, you’ll transfer to the starting point of the hike. The ascent typically takes 4-6 hours, depending on your fitness level and pace. The trail winds through lush rainforest before reaching the bare, rocky terrain closer to the summit. Upon reaching the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the world’s largest lava lake. Marvel at the mesmerizing sight and spend the night in basic cabins provided at the summit, where you can witness the lava lake’s glow after dark, a truly unforgettable experience.
Day 6: Descend and Departure
After a memorable night at the summit, wake up early to witness the sunrise over the lava lake before beginning your descent back to the base. Once you reach the bottom, return to Goma and cross the border back into Uganda. From there, transfer to Entebbe or Kampala and head to the airport for your departure flight, concluding your epic adventure through Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
